This is Anandgarh as I imagine it in c. 1700, the seat of Sikh political power during the time of Guru Gobind Singh.
I started this painting to show what Anandgarh looked like. By the end, I understood what it meant. More than a fort, it was a declaration of Sikh sovereignty.
Somewhere between then and now, we strayed from the ideals of those who built it. We started asking for a place instead of claiming one. We became what no emperor could ever make us: subjects.
ਭਲ ਭਾਗ ਭਯਾ, ਤੁਮ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹੋ,ਗੜ੍ਹ ਆਨੰਦ ਫੇਰਿ ਬਸਾਵਹਿਗੇ ॥Fortunate are we who make this promise: we shall re-establish Anandgarh.
